Wealth creation structures

The question is not only what you invest in, but who or what owns it

Ownership is a strategic decision

Structure determines how income is taxed, how assets are protected, how flexibly wealth can be moved between generations, and what happens if circumstances change unexpectedly. It is one of the more consequential decisions in a financial plan, and one of the most commonly made by default.

There is no structure that is right for everyone. A family trust that suits a business owner with variable income may add cost and complexity for a salaried professional. A self managed super fund gives control, and with it real trustee obligations.

What matters is matching the structure to the circumstances — and being honest when the simpler option is the better one.

Structures we advise on

  • Personal and joint ownership, and when it remains the sensible choice
  • Family trusts, and how income and capital are distributed
  • Company structures and retained earnings
  • Self managed superannuation funds (SMSF)
  • Insurance bonds for longer-term, tax-paid investing
  • Reviewing existing structures that may no longer fit

On self managed super funds

SMSFs attract a lot of attention, and they genuinely suit some people. They also carry administrative and trustee responsibilities that do not go away, and they are not automatically better than a well-chosen alternative.

Where an SMSF is being considered we will model it honestly against the alternatives, including the ongoing obligations, before making a recommendation either way.
