Tax efficient investment strategies
What an investment returns and what you keep are two different numbers. Strategy should account for both
After-tax returns are the ones that count
Two portfolios can hold similar investments and deliver meaningfully different outcomes, simply because of how and where they are held. Ownership, timing and structure all influence what reaches you after tax.
That does not mean tax should drive investment decisions. A strategy built around a tax outcome rather than a sound underlying investment tends to disappoint on both counts. The goal is to make good investment decisions, then implement them in the most sensible way available.
Because tax rules change and personal circumstances change faster, this is an area that benefits from review rather than a decision made once and left alone.
What we look at
- How your existing investments are currently taxed
- Whose name, or which entity, should hold each asset
- The timing of realising gains and losses
- Available superannuation contribution caps and concessions
- Structures appropriate to your marginal rate
- Coordinating with your accountant so advice and tax return align
Working alongside your accountant
Strategy and tax overlap constantly, and the two work best when the people responsible for each are talking to one another. With your permission we will deal directly with your accountant so recommendations are practical at tax time rather than a surprise.
If you do not have an accountant, we can suggest practitioners we work with regularly. We are not tax agents, and we do not prepare returns — our role is the strategy that sits behind them.
