Investment portfolio design and management

A portfolio should be the consequence of a strategy, never the starting point

Design follows the plan

Portfolio construction comes after the strategic work, not before it. Until we understand what the money is for and when it is needed, any conversation about particular investments is guesswork.

Once the timeframe and the purpose are clear, design becomes a more disciplined exercise: an asset allocation appropriate to that timeframe, diversification across asset classes and regions, and investments selected to fill each part of the allocation.

Management is the part that continues. Markets move portfolios away from their targets, circumstances shift, and what suited you at forty may not at sixty. Reviewing and rebalancing is where much of the long-term value sits.

How we approach portfolios

  • Establishing your timeframe and genuine tolerance for volatility
  • Setting a target asset allocation to match
  • Diversifying across asset classes, regions and investment managers
  • Selecting the investments that fill each part of the allocation
  • Rebalancing as markets move the portfolio away from its target
  • Reporting clearly, so you can see what you own and why you own it

A long-term approach

We take a long-term view, and we would rather explain why we are not chasing something than justify having chased it afterwards. Investment markets reward patience more reliably than they reward activity.

All investing involves risk, including the risk of loss, and past performance is not an indicator of future performance. What we can influence is the structure, the diversification and the discipline — so that is where we concentrate.
